On October 16, 2024 Energy Northwest announced an agreement under which Amazon would fund the initial feasibility phase for a small modular reactor project near its Columbia Generating Station in Richland. Reuters connected Amazon’s nuclear agreements to surging data center electricity demand. This was funding for development and feasibility, not a construction completion, operating reactor or final regulatory approval. Reuters reported rights for Amazon to purchase electricity from four modules; the announcement does not establish delivered power. October 16 is both the announcement and report date.
