In February 2026, the resident group Preserve Montgomery County LLC filed suit in the Cole County Circuit Court seeking to void Montgomery County's agreement with Amazon for a proposed 1,000-acre data center at the Heart of America mega site northeast of New Florence, alleging multiple violations of Missouri's Sunshine Law in how the project was approved. The allegations remain unproven; in September 2026 a judge dismissed the state economic development department as a defendant while allowing the case against the county to continue. Google and Amazon data centers covering about 1,900 acres are planned on opposite sides of Interstate 70 east of New Florence.
