Constellation announced the agreement on September 20, 2024. It proposed returning roughly 835 MW to the grid, with Microsoft buying energy to help match its data centers’ PJM electricity consumption with carbon-free generation. This was a restart agreement, not an operating restart; the contemporary target was 2028. NRC told Reuters on September 20 that it had not yet received a restart application. Unit 1 is separate from the Unit 2 reactor involved in the 1979 accident. The main Reuters deal article was updated September 21; the event date remains September 20.
